Logan loves musicals- in person, on TV, big screen, etc. You put a story, even if a bad plot, to music and dance- he’s “mouth open, catatonic stare” hooked. He looks past Pierce Brosnan’s vocal talent or lacktherof, and loves, loves, loves Mamma Mia like maybe no almost 4 yr old boy should. Once asked if he’d rather watch Curious George or Mamma Mia, he chose the latter without much deliberation. (G’mom from GA got a big kick out of that, she loves that movie, so no complaints from her!) His neighborhood friend was playing over at our house sometime this fall and he whispered to me- “mom, I think H. wants to watch Mamma Mia.” To which I whispered “How does she know we have the movie here?” You’re SOOOOO busted.
We listen to ABBA in my car occasionally and he can place where certain songs take place in the movie and which group of cast would be performing. Which means all of - he has a great memory, loves the movie but the likely worst part- has watched it A-LOT.
Another favorite he was introduced to by Grandparents Graham- “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”. Hooked back in August at a trip to the beach. Just completely spellbound by all of it. I think it is good suggestion for his bday/Christmas present for them to get him.
Then, finally- today. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The cherry on TOP of all other performances, and the inspiration for this post. He loved each and every float, performance @ the bandstand, etc. I don't know that I've ever enjoyed the parade as much as I did today to watch it through his eyes. I'm sure one year, we'll make it a point to bring the kids to see it in person, like we did ourselves in Nov 2000. One warm, sunny Thanksgiving where the crowds aren't too bad. Yeah, I'm sure it will be easy to score one of THOSE.
While these are just three examples, I have high hopes that while I do not have a little girl in the house to enjoy such classics like Grease, Sound of Music, etc. with me, I’ll have at least a shot at having him sit through it and try it out. Must do so before he’s 7 or 8yrs old and when he would certainly not ever admit to it. If I could get myself and C tix to “Jersey Boys”, I might’ve entertained getting him a ticket to go with us.
As we expand his horizons in this genre, it remains to be seen if he has any talents of performance. Given his begotten-from-his-MOM hesitancy to be in the limelight [to put it mildly] I think he’s going to be one happy spectator above all else. But, I’m glad he appreciates these shows, even if it does come with an ability to overlook PB belting out Abba’s “SOS” in all kinds of crazy octives.
